• Being chief of a joint ISU, USAID, and Government of Guatemala regional development program focused on the poorest two-thirds of that country. • bringing the Main Street program to Iowa. Iowa’s Main Street program is generally regarded as one of the strongest in the nation. • Obtaining a grant from the Northwest Area Foundation to explore how a university might aid communities in Southwest Iowa in addressing problems on a regional basis. • Providing (with Bob Findlay of the ISU architecture faculty) post-flood advice to several Iowa communities that were devastated by the floods of 1993. This work was performed under a contract with FEMA. • Involvement with a graduate CRP class working in West Union, Iowa, on housing issues led to the development of a Housing Needs Assessment Manual subsequently adopted by the State of Iowa’s Department of Economic Development. Completing the needs assessment process outlined in the Manual became a prerequisite for any county/city requesting housing aid from programs administered by IDED. Since retirement in 1999, Jerry and his wife Margaret have kept busy traveling, enjoying their grandkids, and catching up with neglected house and yard work. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in December of 2008. Jerry says he is looking forward to assisting SCCHC in addressing housing needs in Story County.
